Wendy’s promotion plus golf tournament raises $270,000 for TGen colon cancer research
Sale this spring of Jr. Frosty coupons helps push total donations from the Bernice E. Holland Foundation to more than $1.5 million
PHOENIX, Ariz. — Aug. 26, 2019 — In just a few weeks this spring, hundreds of Wendy’s restaurants in ten states across the West and Midwest sold Jr. Frosty donation coupons for 835,000 of the mini ice cream treats, helping raise funds for colon cancer research at the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen), an affiliate of City of Hope.
The $167,000 in Jr. Frosty coupon sales — $1 for a coupon worth 5 Jr. Frosties — plus the proceeds from an annual golf tournament, enabled the Bernice E. Holland Foundation to raise $270,000 this year for TGen, bringing the foundation’s total giving to TGen over the years to more than $1.5 million.
The funds from the Holland Foundation enable TGen to turn laboratory discoveries into new and more effective therapeutics for colon cancer patients.
The Bernice E. Holland Foundation was established in 1999 by Wendy’s restaurant operator, Rick Holland, in memory of his mother who succumbed to colon cancer. The foundation hosts an annual summertime golf tournament and charity auction.
“Each Jr. Frosty donation represents one more customer’s effort against the scourge of cancer,” Rick Holland said. “Together, the funds we raise for TGen create state-of-the-art diagnostic and therapeutic tools for physicians and their patients. We are grateful for TGen’s groundbreaking discoveries.”
Jr. Frosty coupons were sold at 214 Wendy’s locations in Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, Nevada, Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, North Dakota and South Dakota.
